A Manual of Acupuncture

Peter Deadman

Product Description:
Once in a great while an extraordinary book is published that sets an entirely new standard in its field. A Manual of Acupuncture, published by Journal of Chinese Medicine Publications, is just such a book. Painstakingly researched over many years by Peter Deadman, editor-in-chief of The Journal of Chinese Medicine, and colleagues Mazin Al-Khafaji and Kevin Baker, this book is certain to become the primary reference in the West for the study of acupuncture points and channels. Introductory chapters describe and illustrate the channels and collaterals, the various categories of points, and methods of selection, location, and needling. Ensuing chapters present each of the points of the 14 channels as well as the extra (miscellaneous) points, identified by their English and pinyin names, and Chinese characters. Each point is located in accordance with the most exacting anatomical standards to be found in any Western textbook. For each point there is a dedicated drawing, followed by regional body drawings. The quality of the 500 drawings is far superior to those in any other TCM text. There are also practical pointers for finding and needling the points, and cautionary information about what to avoid. In addition to point indexes by their English and pinyin names, there is an index identifying every part of the body reached by each of the channels, and separate indexes of point indications listed according to both TCM and biomedical symptoms.

The Art of Acupuncture Techniques

Robert Johns

Review:
Acupuncture patients who want the nitty-gritty of such needling techniques as depth, placement, and needle type should read The Art of Acupuncture Techniques. It's unique historical perspective preserves theoretical concepts that haven't been taught in China since the Cultural Revolution. The book could stand a glossary, as the Chinese terms for ailments can be a bit confusing, but if you really want to know what's going on during treatment, whether you're seeking relief from a skin condition, angina, or infertility, it's right on target.

Contemporary Ayurveda
Hari Sharma

Amazon Customer  Review:

"I bought this book on Amazon after it was recommended to me by a local medical doctor who is also trained in Ayurveda and incorporates Maharishi Ayuvedic practices in his clinic. I have been frustrated with the bulk of Aurvedic texts available on-line and in my city, which barely skim the surface of Ayurveda and certainly don't attempt to review the scientific literature on Ayurveda. I found this book to have a reasonably good coverage of the history of Ayurveda, a quite good presentation of the theoretical base of Ayurveda (though they perhaps go a bit over the top trying to link quantum physics to Ayurveda-- I myself am not trained in quantum physics, and I respectfully doubt the authors are...), and a good coverage of practical Ayurveda, with a liberal and much-appreciated sprinkling of well-documented references to the scentific literature on Ayurveda. Recommended for those who'd like to have a solid base on which to build their study of Ayurveda." - Anna, USA

Reiki:  The Healing Touch

William Lee Rand

Information provided by Amazon.com

Editorial Review:

The knowledge that an unseen energy flows through all living things and directly affects the quality of health has been part of the wisdom of many cultures since ancient times. The existence of this "life energy" has been verified by recent scientific experiments, and medical doctors are considering the role it plays in the functioning of the immune system and the healing process.

Reiki, a technique for stress reduction that also promotes healing, allows everyone to tap into an unlimited supply of "life energy." Reiki was discovered by Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese Buddhist, early in the 20th Century. Reiki is easy to learn. It has been successfully taught to thousands of people of all ages and backgrounds. A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through you and surrounds you. It creates many beneficial effects including relaxation and feelings of peace, security and well being. Many have reported miraculous results. Hospitals and doctors' offices are beginning to include it as part of their therapy, and this new edition describes several successful approaches now being used across the US to integrate Reiki into patient care.

This revised and expanded edition includes important new information on the theory and practice of Reiki, including the Japanese Reiki Techniques taught by Dr. Usui as well as the Hayashi healing guide. Also included are pictures of the Usui Memorial in Tokyo, and of Mt. Kurama where Reiki was rediscovered.

This book is a must for anyone wanting the latest information on Reiki. Its referenced history of Reiki contains the most detailed and verifiable information currently available. Written with inspiration, clarity and vitality, it captures the essence of Reiki and is an excellent introduction to the subject as well as a user-friendly manual for the experienced practitioner.

Everybody's Guide to Homeopathic Medicine

Stephen Cummings

Editorial Review:

From Library Journal
Written by a medical doctor and a well-known homeopath, who has authored several books on the subject, this revised and expanded edition is a good introduction to the theory and practice of homeopathy. Intended for the lay reader, the bulk of the book details self-treatment options for common ailments. The authors take great care advising patients when professional medical intervention is warranted. For most consumer collections.

Homeopathic Medicine for  Children and Infants

Dana Ullman

Editorial Review:

From Library Journal
Although it's unlikely that this book will persuade many parents to try homeopathic remedies, it should be useful for those already convinced of the merits of this alternative method of medical care. Ullman, who has written two other books about homeopathic remedies ( Discovering Homeopathy , North Atlantic Bks., 1991. rev. ed.; Homeopathy: Medicine for the 21st Century , LJ 2/1/88), explains the system's principles, tells how to assess a child's symptoms, and lists some 78 childhood disorders along with their homeopathic remedies and a list of homeopathic manufacturers. This clearly written and well-organized work is recommended for libraries that collect in alternative medicine.
